Katakana is one of the three writing systems of the Japanese language. The other two are hiragana and kanji. It is mainly used for the following applications in Japan:
Foreign words and loan words:
- Katakana is often used to represent words that have been adopted into Japanese from other languages.
- Names of people or places from abroad.
- Onomatopoeia: Sounds and onomatopoeia are often represented in katakana.
- Emphasis: In some contexts, katakana is used on the PC to emphasize words. Comparable, for example, to italics or bold fonts.
